Cousin Reginald Spells Peloponnesus (Spelling Bee) by Norman Rockwell in the year 1918. Between 1917 and 1922, Rockwell created a series of covers for Country Gentleman, another publication of Curtis Publishing Company, publishers of The Saturday Evening Post. On many of these covers, Rockwell depicts the misadventures of Cousin Reginald Claude Fitzhugh, a city boy who goes to live with his country cousins. Into the mid-1920s, the use of full or four-color reproduction was still limited. In order to provide more interest, publishers often used two-color printing on covers. Skilled illustrators could produce a variety of shades and tones using only black and red, as Rockwell has in this cover.
